Pratt AOS Manhattan

2018–2023

Course Description

I hold these courses dear because they were the beginning of my teaching career. I still stay in regular contact with many of the students I taught, including those from my very first semester in 2018.

At Pratt Institute, the AOS program includes a game design track that, along with Illustration and Graphic Design, requires two introductory semesters of User Experience and Interface Design. I taught the first semester of this sequence. User Experience (UX) design focuses on improving customer satisfaction and loyalty by enhancing usability, ease of use, and the overall pleasure of interacting with a product. This course provides students with a general introduction to User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) design, with particular attention to mobile contexts and pathways to building a career in the field.

Throughout the semester, students completed three major assignments along with several smaller exercises. The first assignment involved redesigning an existing webpage—or a specific section of one—focusing on evaluating the current design, conducting research, and rebuilding it to improve both the user experience and user interface. The second assignment required students to build a functioning website using HTML and CSS. The final project was a one-sheet concept for a future technology or app, with no restrictions on topic or format.
